Smt. Saswati Chatterjee
Saswati Chatterjee, Chairperson of Gandharv Kala Sangam – The Pulse of India, hails from Asansol with roots in Kolkata. Growing up in the coalfield regions, she overcame challenges with the support of her culturally rich and socially active family. A double master’s degree holder in English and History, she also trained in dance, music, and traditional art forms, while nurturing a love for nature, gardening, and painting. Her upbringing, hardships, and deep appreciation for Indian traditions inspired her to create opportunities for the underserved, especially to preserve talents often hidden or ignored. To her, culture extends beyond music, dance, and art, embracing everyday practices such as cooking, embroidery, beauty care, handicrafts, and home décor. She envisions these skills not only as creative expressions but also as potential livelihoods, merging cultural preservation with economic empowerment.
Saswati began her career as a school teacher, serving in both small and large institutions, notably at D.A.V. Public School, Raniganj, where the Arya Samaj ethos shaped her values. Strongly influenced by her parents, Late Parimal Guha and Ms. Bandana Guha, and her teachers, she imbibed discipline, resilience, and cultural pride. Rising to national fame with her performances, she later faced a tragic road accident that forced her into years of recovery. From this adversity emerged her vision: Gandharv Kala Sangam, established in 2012 as a cultural, educational, and social trust. Today, it unites diverse artistic traditions, inspires youth, and preserves India’s rich cultural heritage, reflecting her resilience, commitment, and lifelong mission.
