SPANDAN – The Rhythm of the Rurals and Tribals, a vibrant unit under Gandharv Kala Sangam, began its journey in 2006 as an independent platform promoting tribal dance competitions. In 2012, it became a child concern of Gandharv Kala Sangam with the mission of uplifting and empowering backward and underprivileged communities. SPANDAN extends moral and financial support, promotes education, develops livelihood opportunities, and preserves the cultural wealth of rural and tribal groups. By organizing fairs, exhibitions, and cultural events, it creates vital market linkages for artisans, enabling them to showcase and sell their handicrafts while celebrating their heritage.
Since 2012, SPANDAN has been organizing the Adivasi Utsav, later expanded and renamed Adivasi Loksanskriti Utsav, across West Bengal, with the vision of extending it nationally. This initiative not only celebrates folk and tribal culture but also fosters sustainable income generation for local communities. With the support of organizations such as Coal India, DVC, Paschimanchal Unnayan Parishad, the Government of West Bengal, and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, SPANDAN has grown into a symbol of innovation, cultural pride, and sustainable development. It continues to bridge the gap between tradition and progress, offering rural and tribal communities a platform for recognition, growth, and empowerment.
